Fitzgerald, Scott The Great Gatspy, Symbolism Essay Example For Students
Fitzgerald, Scott: The Great Gatspy, Symbolism Essay The Great Gatsby symbolism essay. By: KristinThe Hidden Story in Green and White Color symbolism is really popular in novels written during the 1920s. One such example is Scott Fitzgeralds novel The Great Gatsby. There is much color symbolism in this novel, but there are two main colors that stand out more than the others. The colors green and white influence the story greatly. Green shows many thoughts, ideas, attitudes, and choices that Gatsby has throughout the story. White represents the stereotypical fa?ade that every character is hiding behind. The color green, as it is used in the novel, symbolizes different choices the character, Gatsby, can make during his life. The green element in this novel is taken from the green light at the end of the dock near Daisys house. The color itself represents serenity, as in everything is perfect. This warns Gatsby that he should not pursue his dream for getting Daisy back, because his chance has passed and everything is as it should be. This is shown with Nicks insight, ?Hi s dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him? (Pg.189)Another symbolization of the color green, which contradicts the first, is the meaning go. As in a traffic light signal, most people associate green with the word and action go. This can be interpreted as meaning Gatsby should go for his dream without hesitation. It implies that Gatsby and Daisy are meant to be together and nothing should stop Gatsby from his destined happiness and love with Daisy. It inspires hope for Gatsby that he is on the right path, heading towards the best years of his life. He believes that things will soon be as they once were, only better. Im going to fix everything just the way they were before, he said nodding determinedly. Shell see.(Pg. 117.) The last symbolization the color green has in this novel is an urge to strive ahead in life, to do better in life and succeed. Gatsby changes his entire persona for a better, more sociabl e, image and status. He is constantly striving to be a more successful figure in society. Ever since he was a boy he put himself on a schedule with hopes for becoming a highly respected, well-known person. He knew he had a big future in front of him. (Pg. 181), his dad says about him. Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this?(Pg. 182).White is the other color symbolism interlaced into this novel. Where green only influenced one character, white has a wider range of influence on the characters. This color symbolizes one thing, a fa?ade, but it appears in every character. For example, Daisy is always seen wearing white, which gives her and innocent naive appearance. It is as though she uses that as an excuse for when she does something ridiculous or childish, making it seem like she does not know any better. In reality, she knows exactly what she does but just doesnt care. She uses this little princess image and her money to hide her biased, snobbish, and co nceited view of herself and her lifestyle. They were careless people, Tom and Daisythey smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together?(Pg. 187-188).Another character that hides behind the white symbolic fa?ade is Jordan Baker. She also wears white quite often. She acts as though she is superior to everyone around her. Her posture, her attitude, and even the things she says imply this arrogance. She was extended full length at her end of the divan, completely motionless and with her chin raised a little as if she were balancing something on it which was quite likely to fall. If she saw me she me out of the corner of her eyes she gave no hint of it-indeed I was almost surprised into murmuring an apology for having disturbed her by coming in. (Pg.13). She portrays a bored and apathetic attitude about everything, which is part of her I am too good for you appearance. In reality, she just wan ts to be as respected and socially accepted as Gatsby. She is not willing to take responsibility for her actions and uses her image as a guard implying that she could not have possibly done anything immoral, much like Daisy. However, She was incurably dishonest. She wasnt able to endure being at a disadvantage, and given this unwillingness I suppose she had begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young in order to keep the cool insolent smile turned towards the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard jaunty body. (Pg. 63). Color symbolism is not very noticeable, yet it can tell a great deal about a story. In this case, the colors give the reader a look at the characters choices and the paths he or she could have chosen compared to the ones the character chose, which adds dimension to the story. The green the different choices Gatsby can make, whether it serves as a warning, an inspiration, or an urge to get ahead. The white symbolizes a mask, or a fa?ade. It allows the characters to portray themselves as a whole other person and hide who they really are. This puts a piece of reality into the story, as everyone wears a white mask of some kind to hide his or her true self from the world. It is the unsubtle clues given to the reader that are fascinating and allow a person to relate to the characters. .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 , .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 .postImageUrl , .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 , .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0:hover , .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0:visited , .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0:active { border:0!important; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webki t-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0:active , .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url( https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left: 18px; top: 0; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0 .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3d01f74d7846292c04304c1dd31dd1f0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Was the Revolution neccessary Essay

Womenââ¬â¢s Contribution in the Union Army Essay Example
Womenââ¬â¢s Contribution in the Union Army Essay The Civil War not only led to the end of slavery, but it also led to the emancipation of women.à à Early America was a country of men who determined that the womenââ¬â¢s place was at home. Married women had no right to own property. The husband owned everything she inherited or earned. She cannot enter into any contract and she could not vote. Women belonging to the more prosperous families spend their time learning polite manners and needlework and to play an instrument and to dance the waltz. It was a quite a struggle if one desires to acquire higher education. In the mid-nineteenth century, the movement for the abolition of slavery was gaining ground. There were several women who figured prominently as abolitionists and among these were Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cody Stanton. They were sent to London as delegates to an anti-slavery convention.à However, they found the doors closed to them because of the old prejudice that ââ¬Å"women belong at home.â⬠The result of the two ladiesââ¬â¢ indignation at such treatment was the first womenââ¬â¢s rights convention held at Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. The outcome of this was the formation of the Womenââ¬â¢s Suffrage Association. 1 Despite this digression, Mott and Stanton remained full time abolitionists as it was with countless other women. They share the common opinion that slavery was wrong and it was their duty, both moral and religious, to have the institution abolished. The writer, Frederick Douglass had written, ââ¬Å"When the true history of the antislavery cause shall be written, women will occupy a large space in its pages; for the cause of the slave has been peculiarly womans cause.â⬠2 We will write a custom essay sample on Womenââ¬â¢s Contribution in the Union Army specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Womenââ¬â¢s Contribution in the Union Army specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Womenââ¬â¢s Contribution in the Union Army specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer This opinion had, in essence, provided a radical change in womenââ¬â¢s attitudes due to their commitment to it. In calling for abolition, they were calling for a change in status quo in all areas be it poetical, economics, religious or social. They had to step out of their houses into streets and parlors and meeting houses to speak against slavery against slavery. They learned to reason, to discuss, to argue. In organizing settlements, they manifested their innate administrative and financial capabilities. They challenged authority and even broke laws by aiding fugitive slaves. They also challenged traditional gender roles. Women started to make their presence felt in society and in politics. Hence, their perception of self began to change as they began to feel their independence from the shadow of men. This was the prevailing mood amongst the women of the North when the war broke out between states. While some women merely continued to work for the anti-slavery cause, some opted to work directly with the fighting men of the Union Army. Among these were Mary Livermore and Clara Barton. Both were born in 1821 in Massachusetts, both became teachers and both labored for the relief of soldiers during the Civil War. Mary and her clergyman husband had already been active in working for the freedom of slaves. The tuning point in their decision to assist directly in the war effort was the Unionââ¬â¢s loss in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Morale was law and casualties were high. Together with Jane Hoge, they believed that something must be done that could directly benefit the men in the battlefields. So, they joined they joined the U.S. Sanitary Commission where they were able to organize aid societies which will secure food, bandages and other supplies. Throughout the Northeast, they were able to organize such societies. Livermore visited wounded soldiers. She was able to cut through complicated bureaucracy in securing discharges or furloughs for the wounded which would have otherwise taken them till the war ended before their papers could get processed. She helped families reunite with their missing love ones by going through voluminous hospital lists. The war dragged on and it was wreaking havoc o n the treasury coffers. Livermore and Hoge hit upon another great plan to assist. They will organize a fundraiser for the Sanitary Commission of Chicago. They would enjoin all patriots to donate items which can be sold or auctioned off. They aimed to raise USD25,000. The male leadership of Chicago were not very enthusiastic about the project but went along with it. The women, on the other hand, attacked it with zeal. Livermore wrote President Lincoln and asked him to donate the original manuscript of the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln sent it to her two weeks later and got in the auction block for USD3,000. After numerous letters, circulars and promotional speaking engagements together with seamless organization, the fair raised USD86,000, far ahead of anyoneââ¬â¢s expectations. Her enthusiasm had earned her the moniker Unionist Joan of Arc. 3 Clara Barton, on the other hand, went into the hospitals and into the battlefield to nurse the wounded soldiers. She worked outside government jurisdiction in bringing food to the wounded, aiding fallen soldiers and spending countless hours to write to the relatives of the dead and helping relatives to find out what happened to their missing family member. After the war, she set up an agency for finding missing men. She also went on to establish the Red Cross in the United States. 4 Over 8,000 women worked as nurses during the Civil War on the Union side alone. They came from backgrounds from the working-class women to those from the middle-class who had never worked a day in their lives. They were either volunteers, members of the local aid committees, relatives of the wounded or former slaves. Most did not have any education or training. Only a few were tasked to assist in amputations or the change dressings. à I narrative Hospital Pencillings by Elvira Powers, she explained her role: she had charge of the diet, covered crutches and procured pads for amputated limbs, filled petitions for furloughs and back pay, wrote letters and read to patients, organized singâ⬠alongs, baked an occasional cake, arranged prints for the walls, and tried to have something on a little stand, which should represent or bring to mind a cabinet, to make them think of home. In short, have tried to make my ward look as Miss B. expressed it, `as if there was a woman in it. 5 Nurses were generally called upon toà à à à à à à à à à to offer moral and spiritual support which seemed mundane but worth a great deal to the wounded Dorothea Lynde Dix was almost sixty when she offered her serices along with about 3,200 volunteer nurses. She was already well-known by that time because of her tireless effort ser to bring about better conditions for people suffering from mental illness. Kindness soon began to take place of brutal treatment and hospitals intended exclusively for their care was built. The Union Army gave her a military commission as Superintendent of United States Army Nurses on June 10, 1861 and under her abler able supervision, hospitals got built and volunteer groups of women throughout the North were sent to work. 6 Another famous nurse was Mary Ann Bickerdyke. She did not have much of an education and had a rather strong earthy yet callous and unrestrained style. She refused to be hindered by the rules and regulations that could get in the way of her determination and dedication to the welfare of her patients. A memorable anecdote was when she ordered the breastworks of the tent hospital taken down and burnt like firewoodà just to keep the severely wounded men from freezing to death. She had been subjected to threats of arrests and various complaints. However, she had a patron in the person of Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman who declared that, ââ¬Å"Mother Bickerdyke outranks everybody, even Lincoln.â⬠7 Women also contributed to the war effort by going behind enemy lines. Several had been documented to have served as spies for the North and fed them information. Among these were Pauline Cushman, an actress and a spy under the Unionââ¬â¢s secret service. She got caught and was meted the death sentence but was saved from the noose by fortuitous events. Harriet Tubman, known for her affiliation with the Underground Railroad, also organized spy network and expeditions that once led to the capture of 800 slaves from their white owners. Elizabeth Van Lew resided in Michigan. She clothed and fed the Union prisoners and was able to put a spy in Jefferson Davisââ¬â¢ home. Mary Elizabeth Bowser served as a maid in the Confederate White House. Sarah Emma Edmonds was a private in the army. She claimed that it was Gen. George B. McClellan who recruited her to spy for the North. At one time, she even pretended to be a Negro to be better able to spy on the Confederates. 8 Sarah Edmonds was not the only one to dress up as a man to get into the Union Army. In a diary entry dated May 9, 1862 by Sarah Morgan, she exclaimed, ââ¬Å"O if I was only a man! Then I could don the breeches, and slay them with a will! 9 This was a sentiment desired not only by a handful of women, it seems. In fact, evidence can prove that there were at least 240 women who pretended to be men. There was Sarah Rosetta Wakeman alias Lyons Wakeman, Jennie Hodgers alias Albert D.J. Cashiers and Sarah Emma Edmonds alias rankling Thompson.à Edmonds service in the army under the Second Michigan Infantry had her as a nurse, mail and dispatch carrier. It earned her a pension and membership in the Grand Army of the Republic where she was the only female member. There were also accounts about Maria Lewis, an African American woman who not only pretended to be a man, she pretended to be a white man. Out of the thirty five cavalry troopers who served under Col. Henry C. Gilbert, five of the m were said to be women. 10 The fact remains, however, that women were forbidden to enlist in the army. Therefore, deception was necessary to gain entry and participate in the war through direct combat. Their true identities were discovered only by accident or because they were casualties. Mary Owens alias John Evans was discovered when she suffered a wound in her arm after serving for eighteen months. She went home amidst press publicity and a warm welcome. Mary Seaberry alias Charles Freeman, a private with the Fifty-second Ohia Infantry was discharged from the service when her gender was discovered after getting admitted in a hospital for serious fever. Sarah Edmonds preferred to desert when she contracted malaria than face the risk of discovery. There were others who disclosed it in a memoir like Lt. Henry Buford otherwise known as Loreta Velasquez. Safronia Smith Huntââ¬â¢s army stint in the Iowa Regiment was disclosed in her obituary. Albert D.J. Cashierââ¬â¢s identity was not discovered until 1913 in the Illinois Soldiers Home by the in-house surgeon. She enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 when she was only nineteen. She spent her entire adult life passing off as a man. No one suspected that she was not who she claimed to be. 11 The reasons for ââ¬Å"donning breechesâ⬠vary from woman to woman. It could be that they wanted to fight side by side with their husband or brother. It could be due to economic reasons and the promise of a regular paycheck. They could be looking for excitement. What is sure, nonetheless, was that they were primarily motivated by patriotism. Their enlistment was voluntary. They knew the risks and yet they persisted in contributing to the war effort in the only way they knew how. According to Blanton, the woman soldierââ¬â¢s contribution to the war may not be significant to the point of altering its course, but it is significant that women even fought. They went against their upbringing and challenged the prejudices existing at that time. They defied the unequal treatment accorded women as mandated by society just to be able to fight for their state. Their actions were revolutionary as well as noble. 12 The abolition conflict that led to the Civil War and then the war itself opened opportunities for women to discover themselves through wage earning work, aid societies, volunteering as nurses and even enlisting in the army. It transformed the womenââ¬â¢s domestic and civic roles. This is contradicted by Nina Silber, however, by stating that this was actually ââ¬Å"an inhospitable environment for womenâ⬠as it ââ¬Å"stems from patriarchal and nationalistic emphasis of the Union War effortâ⬠and continued dependence on the male-run bureaucracy was evident. 13 However, the events following the Civil War proves her wrong. The womenââ¬â¢s rights groups grew stronger. It gained more members after the war and had made much headway in their demand for rights and the male-dominated government displayed more tolerance to their demands. Mary Livermore summed up her wartime experiences and attributed her transformation and her passion to the events during the war. It was not [feminist] Lucy Stone who converted me to Woman Suffrage, she told an audience of womans rights activists in 1870, nor even my own husband, who had been talking it to me for fifteen years. It was the war and the strength of character which it developed in our women. Knowing, then, the qualities of woman and her courage and bravery under trials, I can never cease to demand that she shall have just as large a sphere as man has. 14 The actions of the women during the Civil War made them realize their power and independence. Womenââ¬â¢s contributions were both patriotic and timely to the call for legal and political rights. nbsp;

Free Essays on Forgetting
Have you ever wondered why you just canââ¬â¢t remember that word that is on the tip of your tongue? Or have you ever moved to a new house, but you just canââ¬â¢t get your old address out of your head? There are many explanations about why we forget information. The explanations are not all concrete, but they are a good start in understanding the human memory and the way it works. One of reasons for forgetting can be explained by the theory of Motivated Forgetting. This theory suggests that memories disturb a person in such a way that they subconsciously repress them. Repression is seen as the brain permanently, or in some cases temporarily severing links to memories. This can be seen in adults who have been sexually abused as children, also with people who experience posttraumatic stress syndrome. The only major downfall of this theory is that it still is not understood very well. Another theory of forgetting is known as the Decay Theory. The Decay Theory associates forgetting over a period of time. It also suggests that the physical structure, which encodes the memory, is easily disturbed and that information presented to the memory initially has very weak patterns, which grow stronger as they are transferred into long-term memory. Some of the downfalls of this theory are that it doesnââ¬â¢t line up with the ability to perform various motor skills even when they are not practiced for a long period of time. This theory is also hard to disprove through experimental results due to the fact that it is difficult to construct an experiment in which the decay theory can be completely ruled out. A theory that was not discussed within the textbook is the Gestalt Theory. This theory does not attribute memories to being lost, rather that they are changed over a period of time. This theory however is not applicable to research now due to the fact that it has not had reliable experiments and also that it has not proven to be a reliable research. ... This theory however is not applicable to research now due to the fact that it has not had reliable experiments and also that it has not proven to be a reliable research. ...

American Roots Music
American Roots Music Evolution is often thought of as a process in which man has evolved from a single cell life form to the complex being we are now. The music we listen to today has also evolved from its simplistic beginnings to the modern, sophisticated, commercial, and digital era that has become the listening buffet we seat ourselves to everyday. This evolution that music realizes is a trend that continues in its growth today and will always be a changing, metamorphic entity that enriches and guides our cultural and social identities. The music that began in its simplest form here in America over 100 years ago was brought here by immigrants from their homeland. If America is known as the melting pot, then its music would surely be the broth that gives the soup its distinct flavor. This music that manifests itself in these early American times is as complex as the individuals that enjoyed it.English:This complexity and ability to adapt and change gives music it roots system. This roots system gives mu sic its canvas to paint on, and as music has endured, so have the patrons that utilize this form of expression. This is where we find our American roots music. For many hundreds of years, man has enjoyed and played music for various reasons: meditation, dancing, rituals, entertainment, to express feelings, to reflect on past events and to display what is happening in his world. In the coming of age in this country, music has been used for all of these, but none have been so important in making this country what it is today as the music that has reflected on past events and that shows what is happening in the country at the time that it was written.American roots music has one of its contributors in...

Integration - Causal Chains and Strategy Case Study
Integration - Causal Chains and Strategy - Case Study Example For Sony Technologies, these measures include revenues, customer satisfaction, customer loyalty, capital return, cash flow, product quality, and timeliness, rate of improvement, employee morale, turnover and use of best practices. Every organization is unique and this paper will analyze how to develop a balanced score card system in line with the strategy of Sony Technologies. The logic behind the making of a score card system starts with understanding these challenges in terms of the customers and stakeholders of the organization, and their needs. The management should then come up with the strategic components of the system and validate them. These include vision, mission, strategic perspectives, core values, desired strategic results, objectives, strategic themes, strategy map, strategic initiatives, performance indicators and targets (Rohm & Malinosky, 2010). Having a good strategy helps the organization to communicate its approach and gain a competitive advantage. In a strategy score card, there are four performance indicators for analyzing strategy; financial, business processes, stakeholder/customer, and organization capacity perspectives. The key step in developing strategy is creating other high level strategies and objectives for each theme. For example, customer focused operational excellence and growth through innovation. The creation of strategic objectives is important in developing the plan. Objectives are the continuous actions for improvement that can be measured, actionable, and documented. These objectives are then developed to form a strategy map. This is a graphical demonstration of how an organization creates value for its customers, employees and stakeholders. It is an effective communication tool that Sony Technologies can use to build alignment, transparency and focus on positive results (Kaplan & Norton, Strategy maps: Converting intangible assets into tangible outcomes, 2004). Strategic objectives are important in creating value in

Texas Roadhouse Wont Scrimp on Making Employees Happy Essay Example for Free
Texas Roadhouse Wont Scrimp on Making Employees Happy Essay 1. ââ¬Å"If we take care of our employees, they will take care of our customersâ⬠is a common phrase. In your experience, is it actually practiced or is it just a clichà © on the wall? Discuss the implications of your answer. ââ¬Å"If we take care of our employees, they will take care of our customers,â⬠this quote mostly depends on the individual company and how they perceive their employees. Some companies realize that in order for them to succeed, they must invest in their employees, as employees are the key to a successful and highly profitable business. And in order for employees to remain motivated and continue to flourish, they need recognition, which is a basic human need, regardless of status or job type. Once employees have been acknowledged for their good performance, they feel more appreciated, and as a result will demonstrate greater levels of commitment and dedication. Thereby, producing top results for the company and treating its customers with royalty. During recessions some companies such as Texas Roadhouse, continue to demonstrate employee appreciation through employee gatherings, cash reward bonuses and annual company conferences, in which spouses are invited (Noe et al., 2011). Companies such as Texas Roadhouse and other companies are leaders who want to succeed in todayââ¬â¢s competitive world, and they realize that even during hard economic times, thereââ¬â¢s still the strong need to maintain programs which are aimed at recognizing employees for work place accomplishments. And when employees are truly happy and motivated, they will care for the customers and give their best. Even through our suffering economy, many other companies also continue to celebrate employeeââ¬â¢s performance through various recognition programs such as, cash bonuses, flexible work hour schedules, award celebrations, gift cards, employee appreciation day, company cook-outs, discounted family membership incentives, floating days and many others. Finally, most good leaders appreciate what employees do for the company, and will try to find ways to show love and appreciation. 2. Texas Roadhouse uses money as a motivator for employees. In todayââ¬â¢s economy, describe alternative methods that could be used to motivate their employees. Texas Roadhouse has traditionally been known for their generous cash bonuses in recognition of employee appreciation, such generosity included, cash bonuses ranging from $500.00 in fun money to $20,000 for best meat cutter (Noe et al., 2011). However, in todayââ¬â¢s unstable economy, the smart business leader will find other ways to show love and appreciation for their employees. Texas Roadhouse managers realize that employees are its biggest contributing factor for success or failure, and will find other ways to motivate employees, even during such economic uncertainty. For many companies, non-cash recognition is still a very powerful motivator, and will still foster ways to attract and retain good employees. And even though money is always a great motivator, effective employee compensation goes beyond money, in terms of individual needs being met; such needs as psychological needs, which define human relationships and the importance of employees connecting with customers, coworkers and managers. Employees also need to feel that they are a part of a group that has achieved success (Armstrong., 2010). Texas Roadhouse could customize a flexible-hours plan that would cater to restaurant staff. And even though most employees wouldnââ¬â¢t necessarily have the luxury of working from home, they would still have Flexible work hours and would be given the freedom to switch time schedules with coworkers, possibly allowing them more balance between work and home-life, while demonstrating an established trust between manager and employee. With flexible work schedules, employees can leave earlier or come in later, rotate shifts, or readjust their work schedule to make it more conducive to their life-style (Oââ¬â¢Toole et al., 2011). Another great non-cash employee incentive for Texas Roadhouse could be that of various trainings and self-developmental opportunities. Trainings are very informational and can benefit employees in many ways, as they promote excellent ways for companies to learn of their top talent, trainings will also also satisfy employees will skill deficiencies. Trainings show the employees that their employer supports career development and advancement. The various trainings will expound on existing skills by including missing tools such as, education, updated technological skills and will help promote the companyââ¬â¢s vision for valued progress. Trainings such as employee leadership offer employees development and confidence in independent problem-solving. Texas Roadhouse could also utilize multiple customer service trainings, since they provide direct service to exterior customers. And in order for them to continue on a successful path, they must continue to find ways to teach and reteach their employees the values of world class standards and its quality to customer satisfaction. As employees are exposed to various training programs, their knowledge potential becomes greater, creating more valuable human capital to the company. 3. Discuss the possible effectiveness of each of your alternative methods. Regardless of the economyââ¬â¢s condition, a good leader is able to inspire and motivate its employees, as they understand that happy employees will result in the success of the business. Effective employees are a result of effective managers, and good managers reward employees for good performance through communication and various reward methods. Alternatively, non-cash rewards, such as trainings and flexible hour plans can promote happier, healthier and more motivated employees, which will lead to more productivity. A flexible hours plan can prove very effective, as this method allows employees the freedom to switch shifts, to rotate hours around the clock, or change the time of day in which the tasks will be completed. As employees are allowed this flexibility, there sense of responsibility and confidence increase, as trust and an honor system is established between the employee and the manager. Through the flexible hours plan, employees are less stressed, as they are finding more balance and time to fulfill family obligations as well, all resulting in increased employee productivity. Employee trainings may also prove to be a very effective means of motivating employees. Trainings provide many benefits, as they help to build employees skills and talents, they also can foster a greater team environment, thereby giving employees a wider range of support and comfort. Trainings and other developmental strategies can be a powerful tool, which can aid a struggling worker. Through various training sessions, employees gain problem-solving abilities, learn up-to date technology skills, and become less dependent on the manager. And finally, trainings can help managerââ¬â¢s spot top talent within the company. 4. Analyze how transferrable is the Texas Roadhouse way of motivating employees in other organizations. Texas Roadhouse way of motivating their employees through large cash bonuses and other annual motivational conferences are incentives, which are based on the individual managerial leadership style, and cannot be transferred to other organizations, as every leader exhibits a distinct leadership style. It is agreed that such large cash bonuses will create keen competition between employees, but each leader have their own intangibles or uniqueness, which is spelled out through their leadership strategies. And during an economic hardship, the leader may decide on future investments that would offer the employee various training sessions to build upon their existing skills and knowledge, thereby, offering the employee promotional opportunities which would increase the employees financial gain, as well as making an upgrade to the companies potential success. Leaders must also consider that different people are motivated by different things. While some employees may have financial goals, others may have professional or personal goals, and cash compensation canââ¬â¢t possibly fulfill all human needs. Finally, based on the needs of a company, a good leader will know what to do and how to go about planning in order to achieve a successful outcome. References Armstrong, M. (2010). Chemistry Pilot Experiment :: Papers
Chemistry Pilot Experiment Aim: The aim was to become accustomed to working with the equipment and to find optimum levels of hydrochloric acid and magnesium ribbon to produce 60cm of hydrogen, a sensible amount to produce in the real experiment. We also began to investigate the effect of temperature on the rate and the result of the product (hydrogen). It also served to discover any errors in the procedure which could affect the final result and prevent us getting accurate results, thus allowing us to eliminate these errors in the real experiment. Diagram: Method: We attached a gas syringe via a plastic tube to a test tube and used a clamp and stand to hold the gas syringe in place. Having poured 25cm of hydrochloric acid (of strength 1M) into the test tube, we placed a strip of magnesium ribbon (which length varied each time we repeated the procedure) in the test tube and rapidly pushed a rubber bung into the top of the test tube to avoid any gas (hydrogen) produced in the reaction escaping. We then poured out the contents of the test tube and repeated the procedure using the same amount of hydrochloric acid but a different length of magnesium ribbon. The next procedure we carried out involved changing another variable. Having discovered what length of magnesium ribbon would produce 60cm of hydrogen when allowed to react with 25cm of hydrochloric acid, we then used this length of magnesium ribbon and the same amount of hydrochloric but changed the temperature of the hydrochloric acid that was allowed to react with the magnesium ribbon to see if this had any effect on the reaction by previously heating the hydrochloric acid to different temperatures using a Bunsen burner. We recorded the amount of hydrogen produced every 15 seconds using a stopwatch. Results: This is a word equation for the reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid: magnesium+ hydrochloric acidà ¢Ã¢â¬ ââ¬â¢ magnesium chloride+ hydrogen Here is a table of the amounts of hydrogen produced when 25cm of

Principles of Transportation Economics
All through the phase of airline regulation, the government set airline faires and regulated an air carrier's entry into and exit from particular markets. Assuming that the incumbent airlines made economic profits while they were regulated, what impact, if any, did the government's regulation of routes have upon air carrier's ability to make profits?Transportation economics is considered as the analysis of the share of carrying wherewithals so as to come across the necessities of the general public (Encyclopà ¦dia Britannica Online, 2007). In a broader sense, delivery pursuits create a segment of a stateââ¬â¢s entire trade and industry items for consumption and take part in the responsibility of constructing or intensification of a countrywide or local economy and as a stimulus in the progress of assets. With the hauling precautions direction, there is a constraint that the travelers must hand over a boarding documentation ahead of going through zones outside safekeeping checkpoin ts. Numerous airlines recently proffer passengers the means of departing through the net and producing lodging permits or licenses prior to leaving.Due to government intervention, the imposition of government faires will consequentially affect the fees of airline carriersââ¬â¢ consumers. They will be compelled of taxes, charges, and additional costs on matters such as fuel, airport rents, aircraft financing, which will be reflective and increase the prices that they will be paying for (Hardisty, 2003). And therefore, will have a lower demand for the airline services. This may indeed affect the income of the incumbent airlines since their transactions are regulated. Consumers of their service will eventually hold back their use of the airline service since there are a lot of barriers to entry as stated by Palmby (1995). The former ease of access was lessened. For these reason, people will not be able to bring some things that they usually carry or transport.Additionally as discusse d by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Optimal Solutions and Technologies (OST) in 1999, on account of the government intervention, the administration of airline carriers will have fewer opportunities to improve their systems and just depend on the established government regulation of airlines. Significant losses can be incurred by the managing airlines and they tend to stay extremely susceptible to drop in airline interchange. Their pecuniary chances have gone through noteworthy stumbling blocks. However, although the government regulation of routes has a negative impact upon the air carrierââ¬â¢s ability to make profits, it has also a positive impact in return. Some terrorist attacks through air carriers may be prevented, hence, the management of air carriers does not have to spend money on possible damages that terrorism may have caused (Potter, 2006). Aside from that, together with the cooperation that the management of air carriers is receiving from the government, the running institution may have a directory or catalog of legal persons who may possibly avail of their services. Therefore, the management of air carriers does not have to spend their resources on tracking some unauthorized and illegal passengers. Furthermore, because of authority supervision, there will be more convenient gate assignments (and less reassignments); as a result, more people may eventually avail of the airline services despite higher costs of transport. These sets of incidences cyclically may contribute to beneficial return of earnings to the airline managements.Even though there is a prevailing acquisition and implementation of government regulation in airline carriers, with proper and appropriate administration of their managements, they will be more likely to have a good return in the running government regulation or will be able to have better accumulation of profits.References:FAA/OST Task Force Study (1999). Chinese Starbucks Essay
Starbucks has found success in the USA because of marketing towards ââ¬Å"20-40 year old men and women who are concerned with social welfareâ⬠thus creating the coffee house atmosphere-Heather Karr Employee of Starbucks in Madison, WI. The coffee house in the US includes college students studying, young professionals having casual meetings, ââ¬Å"Soccer Momsâ⬠grabbing a cup of Joe after dropping the kids off at school, etc. All-in-all Starbucks is selling not coffee but the idea of a ââ¬Å"coffee breakâ⬠, a time during the day that one can sit back, relax, and forget about the daily grind. Starbucks had to consider this as part of their main success and research Chinaââ¬â¢s culture to see this same possibility existed for them there. Luckily they found that it did. Due to Chinaââ¬â¢s communistic government implementing a ââ¬Å"One Child Lawâ⬠the same age demographic surprisingly existed: 20-40 year old men and women who want a place to socialize and take a break from their lives. The Family Planning Law in China was implemented to control the growing population in China, has many exceptions, and began in 1978 (enforced in 1979). Learning about this law in a history class previously, I never considered it in a marketing aspect. These individuals have grown up as single children and may have a sense of entitlement. They are well educated as the US media is always reporting on their countriesââ¬â¢ amazing international grade reports. So, this group of ââ¬Å"Little Emperorsâ⬠are more aware of western culture than generations previous and Starbucks had to of discovered that they could give these people a taste of the western world. Lastly, Starbucks had to consider Chinaââ¬â¢s tea consumption before expanding. While the US likes their coffee, China prefers tea in their social events. How could Starbucks take their signature product of coffee and still be successful? They had to sell the coffee house experience and thatââ¬â¢s exactly what they did. 2. Discuss the key political and legal factors Starbucks had to consider in the Chinese marketplace. What are the risks of entering a country with these factors? What changes have occurred in Chinaââ¬â¢s polit- ical and legal structure to the advantage of foreign companies? The standout political/legal factor for Starbucks expanding into China is Communism. Starbucks company originated in a democratic capitalistic country where it became successful. Expanding into China requires a lot of research into not just foreign laws but a very strict and controlling government that frowns on western practices. In 1999 when Starbucks began its expansion they did it with joint ventures meaning they licensed the right for Chinese citizens to sell Starbucks coffee and use their logo. Joint ventures and dictatorship are risky ideas and Starbucks could have easily failed. They made their risk minimal by only receiving royalty fees for the license to use their logo. China became a member of the World Trade Organization in 2001 thus opening the ability for American companies to freely participate in their market. Starbucks took this opportunity buy out is partners and take control over the 60 stores in existence in 2006. From 1999-2006, Starbucks had plenty of time to learn about Chinese culture and educate themselves in Chinese business that allowed them to feel confident about expanding in the future. 3. What demographic factors were important for Starbucks to understand in China? What were the demographics they decided to target? As I stated in my answer to question one, Starbucks had to understand their own target demographic in the successful US market and see if they could replicate that in China. Luckily for them it did. Political factors like the ââ¬Å"One Child Lawâ⬠gave way to a culture shift among previous generations that allowed for the 20-40 year old demographic to thrive. These citizens are independent, educated, and desire to socialize amongst their peers with no where to feel at home in. Starbucks, by ââ¬Å"tweekingâ⬠their menu slightly and adding more dining space than other shops in other countries, adapted to these Chuppyâ⬠demands and found success. 4. What was the initial global-market strategy Starbucks employed to enter China? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages to this early strategy. How has their strategy changed since then and why? Initially Starbucks implemented a joint venture strategy. Meaning, they licensed their company for use in China believing that Chinese business individuals could have a better chance at success than they could. They also took that opportunity to learn and educate themselves about Chinese culture and business all the while receiving royalties for the licenses. This was a minimal risk for them as China was not a country that allowed a global market place to exist until its membership in the WTO in 2001. Their membership created an opportunity for Starbucks to take control of its licenses and eventually to expand further into the country.

The Meanings and Variations of Father
The Meanings and Variations of Father The Meanings and Variations of Father The Meanings and Variations of Father By Mark Nichol Father derives from the Old English term faeder, which is cognate with the Latin and Greek word pater. (From the Latin term such words as paternal and paternity are derived.) The term refers not only to a male parent but also to an older man who serves as a mentor; it was also long employed as a respectful term of address for an elderly man, though this use is almost obsolete. A stepfather is a man who marries oneââ¬â¢s mother, and a father-in-law is the father of oneââ¬â¢s spouse. Fatherly describes paternal behavior, and fatherlike alludes to a resemblance to the qualities of a father. Fatherhood and the less common fathership describe the quality or state of being a father. A father figure is an older man one looks up to as to a father, whereas ââ¬Å"father imageâ⬠pertains to an idealization of someone in that role. Figuratively, the term father may pertain to one who originated or was significantly responsible for the development of something (such as a founder of a movement or as in the epithet ââ¬Å"Father of our Countryâ⬠for George Washington) or to a leading man of a community, or, impersonally, to a source or prototype. In religious contexts, it is a title for a priest or, capitalized, for God. (A father confessor is a clergyman who hears confessions or, by extension, any man a person trusts with secrets.) The verb father pertains to the act of contributing to biological or figurative birth. Fatherland describes oneââ¬â¢s home country, although the term is tainted by its association with Nazi-era Germany. Father Time is the personification of time as an elderly man. Idioms referring to the word include the proverbs ââ¬Å"The child is father to the man,â⬠which expresses that a personââ¬â¢s personality forms in childhood, ââ¬Å"Like father, like son,â⬠alluding to a resemblance in behavior or qualities between a man and his son, and ââ¬Å"The wish is father to the thought,â⬠with a figurative meaning that beliefs often become perceived as facts because someone desires them to be so. Expressions that use the term include the stock phrase ââ¬Å"Not your fatherââ¬â¢s,â⬠followed by the name of a product or other object, to communicate that something is not to be associated with an outdated counterpart, and ââ¬Å"when (one) was a twinkle in (his or her) fatherââ¬â¢s eye,â⬠referring to a period when a man had a notion of being a father but the child had not yet been conceived or born. Unit 8 social problems Duscussion Research Paper
Unit 8 social problems Duscussion - Research Paper Example he lower socio-economic classes are more likely to get affected by depression and anxiety ultimately leading into higher chances of heart diseases (Tuckett, 20003). However, many human service providers can help such people by setting up psychological counseling forum at their workplaces on monthly basis. This can also be an open service for all the citizens of America especially people who are working on a lower pay scale (Henslin, 2011). Also education can play a very vital role in minimizing heart attacks. It is possible if families can share healthy lifestyle and keeping a check on checking cholesterol levels. Internet has provided a great deal of help to the families where the members are provided with significant information regarding relationship of heart diseases and its causes. This will allow the families to co-ordinate and follow a healthy lifestyle. Special Education Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Special Education - Essay Example Again, the paper looks at the modern technologies that are used in the elementary adult education. And lastly, controversial issues surrounding adult education are discussed. ADULT EDUCATION The main purpose of any form of education is to enlighten the learners and to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to overcome many life challenges. And since it is not possible to have knowledge of everything, education therefore is a lifelong process; we spend all our life learning, whether formally or informally (Lindeman, 1926). Education is one, therefore, in terms of its goals and aims. However, education can be classified in terms of the category of learners (age of the learners) who undertake it, and in this classification we have, early childhood education, elementary education, middle School education, High school education, and adult education. This paper deals with adult education, focusing specifically on elementary adult education. It investigates the historical develo pment of adult elementary education and the current legislation that shapes it, the paper goes on to discuss many other pertinent issues on adult education in the contemporary world. ... Adult elementary education has a long history. In formal setting, adult elementary education in Western world was pioneered by Reverend B Morgans, Vicar of Trelach near Monmouth in 1754 (Hudson, J. W., 1851). After realizing that many adults in his congregation could hardly read the scriptures, Rev. Morgans decided to do something for them. He therefore started special classes for the illiterate adults in his congregation. In these classes, the adults were taught elementary reading and writing skills. And to his surprise, as time went on, many more illiterate adults volunteered to join his classes. All the participants benefited greatly from the classes and from then henceforth, the programme of adult education continued in his parish. In 1811, Reverend T. Charles, B.A, established a school in Great Britain at Bala, in Merionethshire. This school was dedicated exclusively for the education of the adults. And just like Morgans school in Wales, some time back, the main intention of sta rting this school was to help the old illiterate members of the congregation to read the bible. Rev. Parole Should Be Abolished Essays -- Argumentative Persuasive Crime Es
Parole Should Be Abolished The procedure known as ââ¬Å"paroleâ⬠in the criminal justice system has been in practice in the United States since the late 1800ââ¬â¢s when it was begun in a reformatory in Elmira, New York. Itââ¬â¢s process provides for early conditional release from prison for convicted felons, after part of their prison sentence has been served, and they are found to be eligible for parole based on factors such as: conduct while incarcerated, rehabilitative efforts/progress, type of offense, and remorse for their crime. Its use has been expanded to many states, and today has become the primary way by which offenders are released from prisons and correctional institutions. Unfortunately, parole is not always rewarded to worthy inmates, thus putting society at risk for repeated crimes that often outweigh the benefits of parole, therefore, parole should be abolished and inmates should be made to complete their full sentences. Prison inmates are usually sentenced by the severity of their crimes, as well as their mental intention at the time of the act. For example: a person who commits murder intentionally expects to take the life of another in reckless disregard for human life, and knows that the act itself which he or she has decided to commit, will surely bring about death. However, in the case of manslaughter, which is also the taking of a human life, there is no actual intention to bring about death. The act that lead to someoneââ¬â¢s death, is measured by the circumstances that made the person kill such as self-defense, or a crime of passion because the killer was provoked in such a way that a chain of events lead to violence which eventually resulted in peril. Because of the difference in how these crimes are carried out, inmates are sentenced differently; some are sentenced to life in prison, and others are sentenced to several years and will be eligible for parole after serving part of their sentence. In lieu of inmates completing their full sentences, parole tries to achieve releasing inmates early based on the idea that the inmate has been sufficiently punished, and should be given the opportunity to become a law abiding citizen, capable of functioning in our society with adequate supervision. Although parole attempts to carefully screen inmates prior to granting early release, their decisions often do not merit wise choices. As a social worker, I e... ...niors who brought us into this generation. We deserve to be protected as much as any other human race. Our tax dollars spent on housing inmates are a lot cheaper for us to pay when one considers the cost of irreparable pain and suffering, of a victim who falls prey to a parolee who had no intention of reversing his or her former lifestyle and recommitted their life to crime. One cannot put a price tag on scarred lives. It would be worth every penny to keep these criminals behind bars until they have completed their full sentences, if it meant even saving one innocent life, or sparing someone an unforgettable damaging experience. In conclusion, parole serves to benefit the inmate who is seeking his or her freedom, while society seldomly benefits from progress or efforts implemented by parolees in the community. We must understand that parole is a privilege, not a right. We must take into consideration that if almost half of the population that is released on parole returns to pris on; parole is not working and should be abolished. Law abiding citizens have earned their right to freedom, and criminals have earned their right to confinement, and should remain that way, as sentenced.

Grade Privilege
School deal with because the school bans the student for using their cell phones in class. My friend, Tucker, got faced with getting placed in SIS for using his phone in class. I believe that the 8th grade students should be able to use their phones in class. To begin with, the phones provided as a great tool for the students to use in the class room. The students were as cheerful about using their phones as much as owing on a field trip. You can also download educational APS for school. For Instance, there's an app that tells you what you're looking at In the sky at night with Just a push of a button and it calculates all the objects in the sky at real-time including moon phase, planets position, and stars position. It takes the class to places we'll never be. Last week, I asked my Science teacher ââ¬Å"l wonder what the moon looks like up close? â⬠Next thing you know, BOOM there we are right where Neil Armstrong was when he kook the first step on the moon In mankind. What abou t the internet access instead of going to the computer lab and wasting up class time, It saves more time for class and learning. Also. For the slow note takers you can use a recording device. Or you can use the camera on your phone to take a picture of the smart board instead of writing the notes down. You also have to remember about the parents and what they think about this. The Chicago Tribune had an article on August 8, 2012 called ââ¬Å"Are cell phone a must for middle school kids? The parents of an 11 year-old girl said that ââ¬Å"Now she can check her phone between classes If we have to communicate with her. â⬠The top reason parents are buying their pre-teens a cell phone was safety, according to the National Consumer League survey. A Pew study noted that 48 percent of parents use the phone to know where their child's location. If in danger, children can reach the authorities or medical provider. In a push of a button, parents can easily reach kids for reason like ask questions, change plans, or to slimly say hello. My good bud, goes to a school where you can use your phone, he said that it was easy to communicate with his parents when he needed to know how he was going to get home In the afternoon, if he forgot something from home like homework, or even when he's sick. Not to mention, but phones are definitely cheaper than textbook. Not only does it help the students stay organized but it saves the school a lot of money. If I could use a phone I wouldn't have to worry about losing things because the phone would keep me organized.Another convinces is that phone are lightweight and fit right in your pocket. A survey says that a middle school would save more than $10,000 each year for the first 5 years, It's Like money growing on trees, when they allowed students look up things and use for educational reasons from the cell phone instead from the textbook. Also the phones have more updated information. Students can forgot about bringing their textboo ks, so instead of getting in trouble for not bringing your textbook you wouldn't have to worry about it. Just last week, I got a signature becauseI forgot to bring my textbook into Science class, If I could have used my cell phone I and it would be fast and easy. You have to remember that we are the eighth graders! We are the seniors of the school! We want to have some more privileges before we head out to high school. By allowing us to use our phones it would be a win-win situation for not only us students but also the school by saving money to pay for better things like letting the football teams have their own home games at Mossy Creek. Or have for clubs to help the community.

Qualitative Data and Collection Methods
Here are the characteristics of a good qualitative data: 1) naturalistic (derived from actual participation or analysis of a subjective data, 2) ââ¬Å"richâ⬠and ââ¬Å"deepâ⬠data (that is, specifics of dynamics of an event or context can be discerned or analyzed), 3) subjective (data should be perceptions of the people in the environment), 4) credible (that is, the data are derived from actual experiences of the people involved ââ¬â the source of data), and 5) confirmable (that is, the data derived may be collaborated by other subjective sources). There is though an additional characteristic (but not required) of a good qualitative data. In some cases, social scientists attribute a good qualitative data based on its transformability into quantitative data (this is though not necessary). Types of Qualitative Data Collection (Qualitative Methods, 2006: URL cited) There are generally four qualitative data collection methods that are frequently used in the social sciences . Here are as follows: 1) participant observation, 2) direct observation, 3) unstructured interviewing, and 4) case studies. There are though variations in qualitative data collection methods. In anthropology, ethnography is used as the primary mode of qualitative data collection. In a sense, it is case study on a wide range (all aspects of a culture are examined and analyzed). In psychology, psychoanalysis methods of qualitative data collection are used to code and validate a personââ¬â¢s psychological standing or perhaps his/her state of mind. For simplicityââ¬â¢s sake, we shall not tackle on these methods. Participant Observation. This method requires that the researcher become a participant in an event or the place being observed. This approach allows the researcher to know the specifics as well as the intent of an activity or the people involved. Without bias or prejudgment, this method becomes more pronounced when the researcher is accepted as a natural part of the culture , assuming that the observations are natural phenomena. Here, the researcher collects first-hand qualitative data, and hence allows him/her to relate it simultaneously with the event or activity (or culture).Direct Observation. This is a different from the previous method in a number of ways. First, the researcher is not a participant in the context or event. The researcher in this case does not in any way mingle or influence the actions of the participants in a context or event. Doing so would undermine data authenticity as well as validation (see Hawthorne Effect). Second, direct observation is a detached perspective. Technologies replace actual participation as a measuring tool for validation and procurement of good qualitative data (as presented earlier).Third, the researcher is observing sampled situations or groups of people; in no way the researcher is immersed in the activity or event. Lastly, direct observations are usually shorter in scope than participant observation in t erms of data viability as well as practicality. Unstructured Interviewing or In-Depth Interviewing. Here the researcher and the respondent have direct interaction. The researcher usually uses a short guide to his interview questions (unstructured) or core concepts to ask about. The interviewer may ask additional or supporting questions that are relevant or connected to the main problem of the research. This allows the researcher flexibility in structuring his/her qualitative data as well as representative tools like bodily gestures and facial expressions. The protocol however in this type of method is that the interviewer respects the principle of confidentiality. Only information approved by the interviewee can be released to the public or to academic associations. Case Studies. This is the frequently used research method in the social sciences (especially in anthropology and sociology). This involves an intensive and extensive study of an individual on a specific milieu. In a sense, this is a combination of structured interview, participant observation, and direct observation. Using all the methods in one setting allows the researcher to get the whole picture of the problem. It also allows him/her to determine the variables or factors at play without undermining validity. Most of the time, if only one method is utilized, there is a tendency for variables to be neglected or misrepresented. There was a case when voting behavior was concluded to be attributed to the party affiliation of the group being studied (participant observation was the only method used) ââ¬â note that only one variable was used. When the study was replicated using combinations of methods, party affiliation accounted only 19% of the relations (when the qualitative data was converted to quantitative data). Although this is not to say that a combination of data is more desirable or more academically reliable (this would depend on the context of the research problem), it is often noted that this type of method has all the requirements for procuring good qualitative data. Process for Analyzing Qualitative DataQualitative data analysis is composed of three general processes: 1) noticing things, 2) collecting things, and 3) thinking about things. These three general processes are connected are related with each other. We shall discuss each of the processes below. Noticing Things. This refers to the general observation of an event or context and the manner by which it is coded. It generally means ââ¬Å"making observations, writing field notes, tape recording, interviews, gathering documents, etc. When you do this you are producing a record of the things hat you have noticedâ⬠(Seidel, 1998:3). Collecting Things. This process is similar to solving jigsaw puzzles (Seidel, 1998:5). The data coded are assembled or disassembled into groups. In this way, relations can easily be extracted. Thinking About Things. This is generally the theoretical part of the research process . Each part of the ââ¬Å"puzzleâ⬠are examined and related to the main problem. After relationships between variables are stated, they are then referred to the main problem (as well as the specific propositions).

Free Essays on Gothic Architecture
Gothic architecture first got its name during the Italian renaissance when the people considered all buildings of the Middle Ages barbaric and associated them with the savage Goths. With the passing of many centuries, Gothic became more clearly associated with the closing era of the medieval age. In time, the separation point would set around the style, which followed, the Romanesque era. The title was later limited to the hardly barbaric architecture of the period between Romanesque and Renaissance. Gothic architecture emerged from Romanesque architecture in the year 1144 AD. A Benedictine abbot called Suger was building a new church outside of Paris. He decided that he wanted something new and impressive. Suger wanted to make the Abby church of St. Denis so tall that it would seem to reach the heavens, and so amazing that everyone would remember it. When people saw this new form of architecture, they were amazed. The Gothic style quickly spread. Towns and cities would not let their churches be outdone by churches elsewhere. They tried to build taller, longer, and more stunning churches than any other. All buildings reflect the society, which produced them, and cannot be understood without some knowledge of that society. Crapulence Doesnt Mean That
Crapulence Doesnt Mean That Crapulence Doesnt Mean That Crapulence Doesnt Mean That By Maeve Maddox A reader called my attention to a sentence in which these words appeared: a cesspool of its own crapulence I turned to my browser and found so many examples of wallowing in their/his/its own crapulence that I conclude that the expression has already become a clichà ©. Apparently a lot of people imagine that crapulence means excrement. Columnist Jonah Goldberg thinks so: Two decades of crapulence by the political class has been prologue to the era of coprophagy that is now upon us. It is crap sandwiches for as far as the eye can see. Actually, crapulence and its related forms crapulent and crapulous, come from a Latin word meaning intoxication. and have to do with drunkenness. crapulence: great intemperance especially in drinking Merriam-Webster crapulence: 1. Sickness or indisposition resulting from excess in drinking or eating; 2. Gross intemperance, esp. in drinking; debauchery. OED crapulous: sick from too much drinking, from L. crapula, from Gk. kraipale hangover, drunken headache, nausea from debauching. The Romans used it for drunkenness itself. English has used it in both senses. Online Etymology Dictionary The vulgarism crap, on the other hand, is used as a noun to mean excrement, and as a verb to mean defecate. Merriam-Webster gives the etymology of crap as: Middle English, from Middle Dutch crap, crappe pork chop, greaves [cracklings], grain in chaff, from crappen to tear or break off The use of crap with excremental associations has been in the language since the 19th century. The Online Etymology Dictionary indicates that crap belongs to a cluster of words generally applied to things cast off or discarded (e.g. weeds growing among corn (1425), residue from renderings (1490s) dregs of beer or ale The OEtyD entry concludes that the word probably comes from the Middle English word crappe, grain that was trodden underfoot in a barn. In case the meaning of coprophagy in the quotation above is not evident from the context, heres the definition from Merriam-Webster: coprophagy: the feeding on or eating of dung or excrement that is normal behavior among many insects, birds, and other animals but in man is a symptom of some forms of insanity Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
