Assignment 12 †The Dress† by Julia Darling is a short story about jealousy and the troubles of single mothers with careers. It tells about the relationship between the two sisters, Rachel and Flora. It is a tense relationship, which finally breaks on their mother s fortieth birthday when Flora has stolen and ruined Rachel s dress. Rachel, unable to handle her sister anymore, goes to live with their father instead. Some time after the mother kicks Flora out of the house. The mother in the story is a forty-year-old bereavement counsellor. She lives alone with her two daughters. We know that she is divorced, because the girls father does not live with them but is not dead either. When Rachel and Flora start fighting, the mother is†¦show more content†¦It gives us a better impression of the characters and also explains their behaviour better than if for example the entire story had been told only from Rachel s point of view. In the story jealousy is a main theme. We see it when F lora tries to be like her sister to gain their mother s attention. Another theme is the troubles of being a single mother with a career. The mother is unable to distance herself from her job and her private life, when trying to be a mother and solve the conflict between her daughters, because what she really wants is just to relax and have a nice time, but since she is the only parent, she is the one with the responsibility of helping them. In conclusion â€Å"The Dress† shows what can happen when an unstable relationship between two siblings breaks and the parent is unable to fix it. The verdict of 500 jurymen judged Socrates as guilty with death as punishment. Who is to blame for his death? Some blames the Athenians for their ignorance killing a great philosopher who has contributed to the foundation of Western philosophy; while other blames Socrates for being the most arrogant human being ever to have existed in Athens. Socrates’ trial was written in the Apology of Socrates with exaggerations by his student, Plato, who was there at the trial. In the Apology Socrates diligently tried to prove his innocence and wished to guide the jurymen away from a deciding on a guilty verdict that would result in sleepless nights because they had lost a great philosopher (Apology 38c). However, many would agree that the loss or the tragedy may not be of the jurymen or even further, human-kind, but it is the tragedy of Socrate’s incapability of being Socrates. Intro Corporate governance is a critical concept in the commercial world of today with the idea originating initially from the U.S. The importance of corporate governance is made more considerable due to the increasing influence and consequences companies have on the daily lives of individuals and making up a large proportion of economic activity. Customer Service Dead of Alive Essay Is customer service dead or alive? My career experience has been primarily in residential property management, where I have had extensive training in customer service. As a result, I have higher professional expectations for those whose job it is to deal with me as a consumer. In the past two weeks certain events lead me to believe that customer service is a dying concept for some companies. In the beginning of February I started a new position as an office manager for a growing manufacturers representative group. My first task was to upgrade our phone service and purchase new phones to accommodate our current as well as future needs. I made the first call to our local telephone service provider. After talking with a customer service representative for small businesses about our current number of lines, voice mail service, and potential employee growth, we decided it was necessary to add two more phone lines and upgrade our voice mail service. To my surprise, the installation schedule would require a two week wait, except for the voice mail, which would be installed the following Monday. With both appointment dates set, we ended our conversation. Monday morning I arrived at the office and quickly realized that we had no dial tone. Using a cell phone, I called the telephone company and requested that they restore our phone service. By late morning we had phone service but no voice mail. So I called customer service again and talked to another representative who was completely unable to answer any questions or tell me when our voice mail would be available. It took more than two weeks for the telephone company to get our voice mail system totally functional. The installation of our new lines seemed to go very smoothly. In fact, at this point I thought that our phone troubles were over. Then came several complaints from our dealers and manufacturers and I discovered that while installing our new phones lines they had turned off call forwarding. Thus, followed more calls to the telephone company, and a five day wait, our business phone service became functional. Customer service at the local telephone company is dead. Their representatives give us the illusion that it is alive, but my experience is otherwise. They have a monopoly that puts Bill Gates Microsoft to shame. Having no choice in your service provider has brought about the death of service. Thankfully, I can end this essay on a happy note. During a wonderful conversation with a customer service representative of a manufacturer of fax machines, my concept of service was resuscitated. Everyone needs a Bibliography: .
