IUD Birth Control Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
IUD Birth Control - Case Study Example An IUD is positioned in the uterus by a healthcare specialist to prevent unwanted pregnancies and/or for family planning purposes. There are two types of IUD contraceptives; Mirena and Paragard (Grimes, 2007). Mirena is the type of IUD that contains hormones. Its functionality depends on levonorgestrel, a hormone released from the IUD once inserted into the uterus. In other words, Mirena is a hormonal IUD which prevents pregnancies for the period it remains inserted into the uterus. The effectiveness of this IUD contraceptive can last for up to a period of five years, although this effectiveness is not a hundred percent guaranteed. However, Mirena is slightly more effective compared to copper IUD. Paragard is another IUD contraceptive, and it is most commonly used compared to the hormonal IUD. In this IUD, the T-shaped plastic device is wrapped with a copper wire, preventing pregnancies by killing sperm through the toxicity of the copper wire wound around the plastic deviceââ¬â¢s stem (Grimes, 2007). This type of IUD can remain inserted into the uterus for up to a period of ten years, the period throughout which it remains effective. Just like the hormonal IUD, Paragardââ¬â¢s effectiveness is not a hundred percent guaranteed, since cases of pregnancies have been reported even with this IUD still fitted into the uterus. Both the above identified IUD contraceptives (Mirena and Paragard) prevent pregnancies from occurring. They do so by hindering the egg fertilization by the sperm. The mode of functionality is ether damaging the sperm to a point that it cannot fertilize the egg, or killing it altogether, meaning that the fertilization cannot, therefore, take place. Mirena damages or kills the sperm using a form of hormone progestin known as levonorgestrel (Fritz & Speroff, 2011). Mirena also thickens the mucus found in the cervix, making it sticky and unfavorable for sperm to get to the uterus. Over and above damaging or killing the sperm, Mirena makes

Western Art History and nudity Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Western Art History and nudity - Essay Example Cubism began from the description of the geometric schemas cubes, which were paintings on exhibition in Paris. Though it does not refer to any art style or movement, its description has a great influence on all art movements. Purism was an improved version of Cubism because of the intense use of paint. A further explanation by the artists created a divide amongst people in that they misunderstood the true meaning of artwork. This movement was a tool that artists relied on to reform France by using simple art impressions. Nude art first began in Greece for religious and athletic festivals. The word nude brings pornography in mind. However, nude painting is a form of creativity in art while the nude photo has to do with pornography. The misconception brings confusion when artists display such creativity to the public. Nudity is an expression of art where the images appear with or with little clothing that cover the private parts. Such images portray meanings that the public can relate to life events. This kind of art is very rampant in the Western art history. In the medieval art, the use of nude images was to express emotions. Literally, the art meant something was pure, originally innocent or a sexual desire if not shame. However, every artist has its own way of bringing the meaning clear with such images. Some cultures associate themselves with such nudity as part of their culture. This depends with how the dress appears. In other communities, they are used for ritual purposes.

Summary the article The Power to see ourselves by Paul J. Brower
Summary the The Power to see ourselves by Paul J. Brower - Article Example The only thing professional managers can do to new managers is to help them trust in themselves and understand their own situation. Self-concept has an extensive impact on individual perception and abilities. The author has as well equated self-concept with a filter that screens and eliminates things that people do not want to hear or see and pass on those things that are favorable to individualââ¬â¢s public image. Self-concept also offers eccentric flavor to individual behavior. A part from its significance in understanding the general human behavior, self concept is exceptionally vital in explaining manager development, especially in the situation where the behavioral change is objective. Referring to Browerââ¬â¢s observation, professional behavioral change is in most cases used to explain individual change in self-concept. The term self-concept deals with immediate and immerses changes in managersââ¬â¢ behaviors. As stated by Brower, an individual behavioral change is in most cases influenced by oneââ¬â¢s past experiences and age. As people grow, they achieve new experiences and learn new things that are incorporated in their perceptive mass. This change alters individual perception on emerging issues and happenings. As a result, Brower observes change in managersââ¬â¢ behavior as a constant process in their career development (Brower,

The three stories I have been studying Essay Example for Free
The three stories I have been studying Essay Explore how relationships are constrained and influenced by the traditions of the different cultures evident in the short stories in section 3 of the Edexcel anthology. The three stories I have been studying are, Country Lovers, A Stench Of Kerosene and Veronica. The three stories are similar to each other, as they are all about relationships, influences that effects their decisions and how their families are put under pressure by one and other and gender segregation. This occurs in everyday life in some areas of the world. In the Country Lovers the story is set in South Africa. A Stench Of Kerosene is set in Northern India and its about a mans love for his barren wife and how his mother constrains his life, Veronica is set in Nigeria and its about a young girl growing up and how her fate was sealed and she didnt have a say in the matter and her friendship between her best friend Okeke and how he tries to persuade her to come to the city with him to live a better life but she turns it down for a numerous reasons. In Country Lovers there is a lot of segregation happening such as racial, economic and educational. We can see this because in the story we are told that at young ages black and white children are split from each other even if they had become friends they would still be taken to different schools where the white children would have been given better education for their life. In A Stench of Kerosene we can see there is more of gender related segregation in the story because when Manaks mother thinks that Guleri is incapable of giving birth she finds a second wife for Manak, from this it shows me that women are only needed for giving birth to children in this community. In Veronica we can also see gender segregation for example when Okeke goes to the city and Veronica does not want to go with him and decides to stay in the village to look after her family in her community it was important that the eldest child looked after the family as if she was the mother, another reason why she did not want to go is because she did not even have standard six (this was the same as SATS)where as Okeke a young male did not have to look after his family and was able to forward his education in the city. In Country Lovers there is a relationship between the two main characters, Thebedi and Paulus. It all starts when they were young children growing up on the farm playing together as all children do, knowing no wrong could come from it but, as they grew older there relationship starts to change in to a more intimate one, they begin to see each other in another way I can see this because in the story it says When the girl came up the bank and sat beside him, the drops of water beading off her dark legs the only points of light in the earth-smelling, deep shade. They were not afraid of one another this shows that the feelings between one and another was mutual they both started to grow fond of each other. The chance of them actually having a real relationship was made extremely difficult because of the Colour Bar making it illegal for black and white people to have relationships of any kind. They are also brought together by Thebedis charm and her own uniqueness compared to the other girls Paulus meets at his school. She also did things that meant a lot to Paulus, things that that the other girls couldnt we can see this in the text when the writer writes She gave him before he went back to school, a bracelet she had made of thin brass and the grey and white beans of the castor-oil crop his father cultivated and also when the author says his was admired, friends asked to get similar ones for them this shows that Thebedi was different to other girls and even though she didnt have money she could still give Paulus a gift that was priceless. In A Stench Of Kerosene Manak and Guleri are married in northern India In the mid 20th century where the community was largely Hindu. In A Stench of Kerosene I understood that Guleri and Manak loved each other but North Indian cultural traditions made things harder for them. Due to her culture Guleris life seems very dull. She does the same things every day of her life. She counted the days to the harvest. Shows how counting the days would make time go by and gives her something to look forward to. Guleri is different to Manak because she wont let things get in her way. Shes more out spoken. She knows what she wants. Your mother said nothing so why do you stand in my why? demonstrating her outspoken character in this story. Her character is far different to Manaks. Manak has a weaker but equally important character. He doesnt stop his mother from arranging another marriage. He doesnt speak out like Guleri. In this culture the main job for the wife to have is to have children and raise a family but Guleri cant have children and Manaks mother who is a big influence in Manaks decision make the decision to find Manak a new wife so he can start a family with her When Manaks mother finds Manak a new wife we can see that Manak is too scared to stand up to his mother but, he does not want Guleri to leave because he loves her we can see this because the author writes He begged her suggesting he is pleading with her to keep Guleri because of his love for her. She then proceeds to tell Manak to go home, this all shows us that she is accepting that she cant give Manak a child and therefore she has to leave him because of his mother, this is called fatalism meaning when you simply take all things that come your way as fate and that you cant change anything. Veronica is a story that is set in Nigeria. The culture there was meant to be very male orientated, where men did not have to cook and clean and look after the parents and siblings and therefore were given better opportunities in life than women. This causes the women in this community to have very low self belief and self expectations. In Veronica the two main characters are Okeke and Veronica, they are very good friends but nothing more, we can see that they just want to be friends by how the writer writes she still had a certain attractiveness that I knew would appeal to some men from this quote I can tell that Okeke only liked Veronica as a friend and how neither of them wanted anymore than friendship, but never the less they care very much for each other and Okeke tries to help veronica when ever he can, we can see this when Okeke is moving to the city and they are talking for the lasts time When I have qualified I will send to take a correspondence course from this quote I can see that Okeke is a caring young man and he wants Veronica to live a better life away from the country side. Okeke and Veronica are good friends, neither of them wants anymore than that, but never the less they care very much for each other and Okeke tries to help veronica whenever he can. In Veronica the friendship between Veronica and Okeke is to do with how comfortable they are with each other. They dont squabble or argue but are at peace with each other. They are true friends. But for all the misery in her own life she never seemed to envy mine demonstrates how they are casual together. They are best friends. They dont need to show each other up. Okeke is the type of person to seize life with two hands and not let go. I had won a scholarship to the university shows how he grows academically. He wants to see more of the world. His ideas of life compared to veronica are totally opposite. He seizes any good opportunity in life useful to him but Veronica is a fatalist. She waits for things to come her way. This is due to her cultural upbringings. In the story it doesnt really mention whether being a fatalist is a bad or good thing because that is for the reader to decide. Her culture may have taught her to accept what life gives so she must think its a good thing. In the story Country Lovers the rules of apartheid pull Thebedi and Paulus apart. We can see this when the writer tells us that they were not afraid of one another this tells me lots in a way of saying they kept their relationship secret because they were afraid of the rest of society would think and, what would happen to them, Paulus had a lot going for him at the time he was a young man going to college to study to become a vet, and all the other dads saw him as a suitable man to take there daughter. We can see that the rules of apartheid pull them apart a lot in the story when the writer writes They each returned home with the dark-she to her mothers hut, he to the farmhouse this show us that Thebedi lived In a poor hut well as on the other Paulus lived in a farm house shows us that Paulus was a much wealthier person than Thebedi. When Thebedi was eighteen her parents met up with a boy called Njabulo who was the same age as Thebedi and his parents to set up a arranged marriage. Th is was common for people who didnt have a lot of money they would get married and become one family and where the grooms parents give the bride a dowry, this might be money or something useful for example a cow. Thebedi and Njabulo try to have a baby Njabulo thinks that Thebedi is pregnant with his baby but she is pregnant but not with his baby. Later on in the story Thebedi has the baby and it is light skin at first Njabulo thinks after a few weeks the baby will darken up but the weeks go on and the baby is still light skin then Njabulo gets thinking and believes that its not his baby its Pauluss, but he still stands by Thebedi he evens builds a house for them to live in this tells me that he is a caring man who has a good heart and just wants to provide for his family. The innocence in two, young children became tainted as they became young adults. The young man Njabulo asked her father for her demonstrates how traditional Thebedis family is, so it would be a shock if they find what shes been doing. Her culture holds her back from what she wants to do or say. It also demonstrates that black people of South Africa during the apartheid were more traditional then the white people. I believe t his is because the white people ruled at the time so the black people were left never to develop their ideas on tradition. They couldnt change their culture just like the UK has since the early nineteen hundreds where women were seen as to clean the house and look after children where as in now women have the same rights as men. She was calm; she said she had not see what the white man had did in the house demonstrates her giving up knowing that the white man will always win. The South African apartheid has taught her that black people are unimportant in the eyes of white people. Also, she refers to Paulus as the white man and not her sweet heart any more. This demonstrates how she realized Paulus was just another white mane and to him she was just a black woman. It was as simple as that. I think that Njabulo played a huge role in Country Lovers because he supported Thebedi and he didnt care whether the baby was his or not. He just wanted to be there for her. In the story Country Lovers the rules of apartheid pull Thebedi and Paulus apart we can see this when the author (Nadine Gordimer) tells us that th ey were not afraid of one another this tells us lots its a way of saying that they kept their relationship secret because they were afraid of the rest of society, what would happen to them, their families and the rest of their lives. We can see that the rules of apartheid pull them apart more and their culture does when Nadine Gordimer says each returned home with the dark-she to her mothers hut, he to the farmhouse this shows the wealth differences and how truly different their lives really were, she lives in a hut and he lives in a big farmhouse, this is also another way of telling us that they will never be equal or be able to have a real relationship because of the law in the country at the time, their different cultures and because they live very different lives in terms of wealth and work also they have received very different educations. Also at the preparatory examination where she went to give evidence against Paulus at the end of the trail Thebedi was interviewed by a number of newspaper who spelled her name in a variety of ways she spoke in her own language this tells me that she is trying to get things back to how there were and trying to get back in to her community she was quoted beneath her photogr aph It was a thing of our childhood, we dont see each other any more she makes it seem that it was just a fling and a thing of the past which will never happen again. In Veronica we can see the problems are mainly about education and that how Okeke a young male and Veronica a young female at first live the same life but then it gradually chances to a point where Okeke moves away from the country to further his education wheres as stays in the country to further her life of cooking and cleaning for her family. Okeke moves to the city because Okeke has better opportunities in life I can see this when the writer writes I had won a scholarship to the university this shows me that he has chances to achieve something in life where as Veronica does not have any qualifications not even standard six this show her lack of education. This then brings her self expectations to drop again. Okeke and Veronica are very different, Okeke is a man and therefore has much higher self expectation where as Veronica a women has much lower self expectations, we can see this when Veronica says they are my family, that is enough this shows that she doesnt see her self leavi ng her family, and that she will never achieve anything in her life she will just farm and look after her family all of her life. Where as Okeke is much more ambitious and wants to achieve something in life we can see this when he says I won a scholarship to the university and when he says I thought I knew my worth showing us that he strived to be the best he could by getting a scholarship to the university, we can also see he says I thought I knew my own worth telling us he thought he was capable of doing well in life and could do better than he thought at that time. Veronica also states that it is her. What Ive noticed about this story is although Okeke and Veronica live in the same village they have different cultural views due to their class. Okeke comes from a richer family so he is freer but Veronica comes from a poor family and they have typical ideas in culture which are very out dated. This story tells me that culture varies in class of family. The attitudes towards education from Veronica are simply hopeless. She feels its not a womans place to work due to her culture. When I have qualified I will send you money to a correspondence course explains that Okeke knows how Veronica feels about women and work so he offers her money for a correspondence course as its thought of as a female role but she still rejects his offer. She thinks life has given her a specific job which is to look after her family. She comes from a small tight-knit community and she has no education. She has really low expectations of herself and hasnt got a lot of confidence. Okeke, I wont live to see tomorrow. Nor do I want to. My husband is dead and my child also. There is nothing left for me in this world which definitely demonstrates how weak she has become. She thinks if she stays in this world she would have nothing to do. She thinks she was put on the world to look after her family not to go out and accomplish something great. Due to her culture her friendship with Okeke has drifted away because all her life she was taught that her job is to look after people while Okeke was taught to accomplish amazing things In A Stench Of Kerosene the, lifestyle of the two main characters drives them apart, because of their beliefs in their community that the only reason two people get married is for having children and if they cant or dont want to have children they will most likely to get divorced. This is what separates Manak and Guleri because of their culture the mother is the head of the family nothing happens without her say so, this is called a matriarch culture a female dominated community. Since that Manaks mother believes Guleri is incapable of having babies. After 7 years of waiting she finds Manak a new wife making him to depart with Guleri which he never wanted to do. We can see that this family is a matriarch culture when Manaks mother specks bad mind to him here is a quote that proves Manaks mother is in control, Why do you croak like an old woman?Be a man then the writer tells us that Manak was too scared to reply to her and say you are a woman, why dont you cry like one for a change. All of these quotes shows me that Manak is very scared and intimidated of his mother and that he could only stand up to her in his head. Manak was given a new wife shortly after and he was too scared to stand up to his mother and fight for Guleri making sure that his mother knew that his love for Guleri made him not care if she couldnt have children. The attitudes towards marriage and the role of wife in A Stench of Kerosene are so old and out dated. The point Im making is that women in North India were perceived as objects. I can tell by Guleris actions. She went about her daily chores fed the cattle, cooked food for her parents in law demonstrating how bored she must have been of her life. She does the same thing every day. Her daily life is the same as a servants life. During the time of Hindu marriages women were seen to do three main jobs which are to cook, clean and carry children. The most important is to carry children. What is unsurprising in the story is why Manak married again but I know it was due to parental and cultural teaching. Manak and Guleri were married for seven years and she had never borne a child and Manaks mother had made a secret resolve that she would not let it go beyond the eighth year which blatantly points out that the whole point of a Hindu marriage is to have kids. Manak dared not to speak to his mother about this. As I analysed the story it seems to me that she makes the decisions and is the head of the house. She is the matriarch of the family and if he retorts to her it could make life harder for him. Manak and his mother dont have a strong relationship. Their relationship is based on his fear to her and she uses it against him by pushing him about. Manak is adapting to his culture as it teaches mainly to have children. He is being taught that the womans job is to cook, clean and carry children while the man provided. Finally I think that all three of the stories are well written and have good points on everyday life in different cultures and shows the problems that people are facing from different cultures on a everyday bases I also thought that it was very good how each of the three stories all dealt with different issues in there community but they all where connected to each other for example gender segregation. In the story Country Lovers it deals with the problem of racial segregation and it was sensitive on the matter but shows how difficult it was for black and white to have any relationship together and yet it told the truth and did not make up something. A Stench Of Kerosene it dealt with the problems in a part of the world about arranged marriages but it went in to detail about it and how many of the family in northern India were a matriarch one and how even if a man has his own opinion his mother would change it if she didnt like it, and how if your not the person who you love you dont have anything to live for. A Stench of Kerosene Manak didnt like the idea of marrying again but maybe as he grows he might decide to change his mind on arranged marriages. There is a huge difference between English culture and the cultures in the three short stories. We do not have the right to judge other people on their cultural beliefs as they could do the same to us. We all have different cultures and when we have adjusted ourselves to them we get used to them and keep them. In these three short stories it is clear that culture plays the biggest role and is put before love. Veronica tells the story of domestic violence and how it is for a woman in the country and the city. When she was younger she didnt have it great she was beaten at home by her father but still loved him she does everything she can for her family but they dont care about her they only care for themselves and veronica accepts this as fate and lives with it she know her only role in life is to cook and clean nothing else. From reading studying these three short stories I have realized that where I come from my culture and community is a more of an open for me, there are a lot opportunities for me even at a young age that for some wont even come in a lifetime.

Marketing Strategies of Hyundai in India
Marketing Strategies of Hyundai in India A marketing strategy explains how the business will achieve the objectives laid down in the overall marketing plan . The marketing strategy explains how the business will reach its target audience , which should lead to an increase in the sales . Marketing strategies should include clearly defined roles and the responsibilities and should also set time scales to each task . A marketing strategy may seem similar to the business strategy , however it is different in that it focuses on one specific aspect of the business , the customers . A business strategy looks at all the components of a business such as the supply chain , the manufacturing operation , human resources and so on . The marketing strategy is only concerned with effecting a plan that will bring the businesses products or services to their target audience . WHY MARKETING STRATEGY IS IMPORTANT ? Marketing plays an important role in the strategic planning process for many organizations . Although some marketing positions are represented at the corporate level , most are at the functional level within the business units of an organization . Marketing is involved in the strategic planning at all organizational levels . Strategic marketing describes the marketing activities that affect the corporate , business, and marketing strategic plans . Strategic marketing activities can be classified into three basic functions . First, marketers help orient everyone in the organization toward markets and the customers . Thus , they are responsible for helping the organizations execute a marketing philosophy throughout the strategic planning process. Second , marketers help gather and analyze the information required to examine the current situation , identify trends in the marketing environment , and assess the potential impact of these trends . This information and analysis provides input for the corporate , business , and marketing strategic plans . Third , marketers are involved in the development of the corporate , business , and marketing strategic plans . Marketings influence varies across the organizations . For organizations driven by a marketing philosophy , marketing necessarily plays a key role in the strategic decision making . The trend toward pushing the strategic planning responsibility further down the organization is increasing the marketings clout in an organizations strategic planning process . Marketing management relates to specific product the marketing strategies . It differs from strategic marketing in its basic orientation . Strategic marketing focuses on the broad strategic decisions at the corporate and the business levels . These outlets are just the basic models made with small investments and these are not the typical permanent outlets made with brick and stone . Their basic plan is to give a feel to rural folks with car demonstrations , test drives in addition with basic little repair requirements . The size dimensions for these rural showrooms would be 900 sq ft.. Around 150 of these rural outlet showrooms would house a 2,000 sq ft service workshop of their own . A four member team is made with 2 sales and two executives for service by the Korean Autocar giant for the rural model and they will visit the rural outlets at regular intervals. The ever increasing importance of rural areas is signified from figures which show that they contribute about 31 per cent in sales for the company. According to Saxena the company plans to generate 33 per cent share, by the end of 2013 from these rural models as they help amazingly in increasing the sales. It is estimated that 356,717 cars were sold by Hyundai n 2012.
The Alliance Between Renault Nissan Marketing Essay
The Alliance Between Renault Nissan Marketing Essay In the age of globalisation companies are trying to cope with consequences of this historical process. Scholars in this field have noticed that companies could either merge or conclude an alliance to cope with globalisation. The scholars, however, differ among themselves as to which is better, alliance or merger. By being global a firm would have a better chance to enter a new market, and increase both its global market share and global competitive advantage (Shenkar,2008,p.303,332). The two processes differ in terms of their meanings and the reasons for choosing one of them rather than the other. International mergers are when two firms from different countries, and have their own capabilities, agree to integrate in order to create a stronger core competency in the global market (Shenakr2008:303). However, strategic alliances are contracts between two parties from different countries, when they agree to cooperate in order to do a particular task(Charles, international Business, p.411).This shared task cant be realised and create a value unless the two parties work together(Andrew, Strategic alliances, P.404).(I can delete this phrase) In the case of Renault-Nissan, it is preferable to have an alliance than merger for many reasons. Charles Hill (int. business:412) claims that Alliances, would facilitate more than mergers the entrance for companies to new geographical phases where there are some restrictions on foreign investments. (Comprehensive cases,p. 312)the two companies had their own capabilities in their own market. Renault for instance, already existed in Europe and North America, and was well-known for its design and marketing. At the same time Nissan was the powerhouse engineering in Japan, Europe and North America. Therefore, there was a good chance for Renault to Enter the Japanese market where there are many barriers from the Japanese government. Synergy however, is vital for alliance. According to Shenkar( 2008: 333) alliance would be more rational when the two firms look for further synergy in their financial, technological aims. He adds, this alliance would provide the two parties with complementary resources and capabilities(HSenkar, 2008). This synergy between two companies was the key element for choosing Nissan-Renault alliance. According to Chosn, the manager of the alliance: we said from the beginning that we were not looking for a merger, but rather to get greater value from synergy between the two companies (Emerson, the interview). According to Chosn, the reason for choosing alliance rather then merger was that both companies were looking for turnaround. Although alliance was more risky than merger, yet they chose it because they thought it would give them more opportunities to develop.(Emerson, the interview). However, despite the advantages Nissan-Renault gained from the alliance, they faced challenges. One of the challenges is whether the alliance would lead to an increase or decrease in the price share (Ernst Halvey, When, p. 48).This was a real challenge for Nissan, whose share price fell when it entered the alliance.(Comprehensive cases). Furthermore, the two companies had a challenge of cross-culture problems. However, with their ability to focus on the work objective they were able to succeed. 508 Renault before and after alliance The alliance between Renault Nissan, as indicated by the results in March 2004, was an outstanding paradigm of a successful alliance around the world. However, before 1999, the prospective of forming an alliance between these two firms was not such rosy. From Renaults point of view, various factors were strengthening the former opinion. Firstly, (Morosini P. Dec 2004) Renault was recovering during 1996 and 1998-9 turning losses of US$680 million into combined profits of US$1.65 billion. Moreover, the failure to merge with Volvo in 1995 had left its mark on the company and any further attempts to a new alliance were confronted distrustfully. In addition, the fact that both firms were playing a dominant role in the auto industry of their countries was indicating that a potential alliance was going to collapse in a decision-making stalemate. Nevertheless, the supporters of the latter argument were gainsaid. The mutual benefits that they were going to absorb from the alliance laid aside the potential problems and both parties focused on the success of the alliance. This was a crucial challenge, which they managed to handle by learning to trust each other, be truthful and honest during the negotiations. Additionally, (Bartlett C., Ghoshal S., Beamish P., 2008) by forming joint study teams, in order to test their companies ability to work cooperatively, they minimized the cultural stereotypes and set the base for exploiting joint synergies. The two companies were so complementary in terms of geography, product ranges and personality that inevitably the future was foreboding promising. Besides, this process gave Renault an advantage over competitive suitors such as Ford and DaimlerChrysler, which focused only on finding synergies on past and current advantages rather than on a prospective productive future. On this basis, Renault, through the alliance with Nissan, achieved to gain international structure which enabled it to deal successfully with the changes which were taking place on the world automobile stage. Thereby, Global synergies and the expansion of its production to foreign , until then, markets like Japan, North America and Asia enhanced its potential and made it a countable member in the auto industry. 357 Nissan before and after alliance Nissans history starts from the early of 1933. Nissan is a Japanese automobile manufacturer which achieves, through the years to have strong market presence in Asia and US. Except for the fact that Nissan was a highly emblematic symbol of Japans industrial strength, had also a number of strong points such as technological and engineering competence, and also was good at making large cars. In late March 1999 Nissan and Renault sign an agreement for a Global Alliance. Aim for this agreement was to provide an advantage and achieve profitable growth in both companies. However, Nissan was nearly bankrupt and faced significant debt problem when the alliance formed. One of the major reasons for this debt and financial difficulty was the fact that Nissan invested a lot of money in different companies and this has a result, Nissan not be in position to invest money in the company and its products (Ghosn, 2002). Therefore the company for a long time did not have any profit and this made the debt for Nissan in 1999 to reach the US $22 billion. Furthermore, during the same year (1999), the domestic market share had fallen from 17.4% to 13%. Have in mind this and after that Daimler Chrysler and Ford refused the idea of a partnership and broken of the alliance talk with Nissan, the company resorted to the strategic alliance with Renault, where both companies had clear idea of what they wanted. The alliance was vital for the two companies as Nissan needed Renaults cash in order to reduce its debt problem and Renault wanted to learn from Nissans success in US and Asia which was essential for the expansion in its market. During the period of social initiation process, of six months, many advantages arose over competitors as they carried out static analytical evaluations and they focused on finding collaborations based on their past and current strengths rather than on jointly future. In order to accomplish this, Nissan had change significantly to redeem its profitability and competiveness. First Nissan quit the investments in other companies, in other words the keiretsu which is a Japanese traditional rule that requires all the companies in Japan to have long-term purchasing relationship, intense collaboration and frequent exchange of personnel and technology between companies and selected suppliers (Okamura, 2005). The personal management also had changed and whereas Nissan in the past appraised their employees based on the period that they were working for the company, now they changed the criteria of evaluation by looking on the performance of each employee. Further they set up a common language i.e. English and they have created nine Cross-functional teams. By the implementation of the above changes, Nissan manage to cut down in purchasing cost, to reduce suppliers, to close overlapping outlets and plants and finally to reduce the work force. Through the alliance of Nissan and Renault, the benefits that arose were obvious and determinant. Transparent benchmarking allows two culturally diverse companies to share best practises and also the common platform and shared purchasing strategy had delivered huge cost of savings. Noticeable is the fact that in order to preserver corporate identities they decide to remain as separate managements, separate brands and separate companies while every decision was affecting both brands. The operation recommendation which arise from this alliance case provide valuable elements on how two companies, that are in the same situation like Renault and Nissan which show strength in different competence and regions of the world (Nissan had strong presence in Asia and US while Renault had presence in Europe), can approach the growing and competitive auto manufacturing global market. Therefore the success of this alliance is also interrelated with the synergy among the two companies and the framework of equality help the transfer of knowledge between foreign engineering teams. Finally Nissan successfully achieve to jump from seventh most valuable automobile company in the world to the fourth. 656 Structure of Alliances The aim of this section is to study structure of the alliances between Renault Nissan and advice about the best possible structure in futures alliances. Strategic alliances are said to be a source of competitive advantage. However there is a growing concern over their failure rates. One of the major causes is the inability to implement the appropriate governance structure and management control systems in the newly formed association (Smith, 2008). According to the study most of the companies form an alliance management team which manage across the organisation using Cross-Company Teams, Cross functional teams, Steering Committees and Alliance Board. By observation, Renaults was interested in creating respect between two alliance partners and respectively followed an Andean civilization approach to work together for six months before forming an alliance. (Donnelly, Morris Donnelly, 2005). The social initiation process provided Renault Nissan an advantage over its competitors such as Daimler Chrysler. The later company did not experiment social collaboration to develop the ability of sharing knowledge and building trust (Deresky, 2008). Therefore the structure in Renault Nissan was the result of, what the companies experienced during the social initiation stage. They formed a new board having 5 members each from the host companies. Further to speed the integration and improve communication process they created Nine Cross-functional teams (CFT) and 11 Cross-company teams (CCT) (Donnelly, Morris Donnelly, 2005: 434). More importantly, these teams had a Chair person from Renault, Vice Chair person from Nissan or vice-versa. Moreo ver the CFT was limited to 10 members from different departments such as purchasing, manufacturing which ensured progress between these departments (Donnelly, Morris Donnelly, 2005). As a result the alliance was able to launch 22 new car models in the next three years and increase the manufacturing capacity in Japan. Moreover the CCT created efficient synergies. One of the examples of amalgamation process was in Mexico. Renault had left the market in 1986 and Nissan was facing overcapacity in1999. So alliance decided to put the managers from both the companies together and recognise synergy opportunity. In just five months Renault cars were being manufactured out of Nissan plants and the capacity utilisation of the plant increased from 56% to nearly 100%. In summary cross-company teams allowed Renault- Nissan to first go through a social initiation experience and then move into a formal framework of collaboration and knowledge exchange (Deresky, 2008: 318). Similarly cross functional teams enhanced the process of integration. Cooperative Operation In this part of report, we will discuss how close collaboration between two companies in operational level has resulted in synergy. The main sources of data in this part are Renault and Nissan official websites. Supply chain management is one of the areas of key concern for global car manufacturers (John Gattorna). Major players in Car Industry are looking for revolutionary methods of management of their suppliers. In Renault-Nissan case, RNPO or Renault Nissan Purchasing Organization is a unique joint organization responsible for integrating purchasing Strategy. As we will describe in next paragraph, as a result of mutual engineering efforts, Renault and Nissan cars can share components. This fact allows the alliance to combine their purchasing orders. Therefore, not only the cost of order has reduced but RNPO defines worldwide purchasing strategy and now it is accountable for full purchase of Nissan and Renault. (www.renault.com) Another area for mutual cooperation between two companies is engineering which could be a lesson for other car manufacturers to reach economic of scale and scope. The key difference in Renault-Nissan case is concentrating on designing and producing components of car jointly instead of developing whole car from scratch. The alliance achieves economic of scale by producing in larger scales and economic of scope by manufacturing components which are compatible for different models of both brands. Moreover, one of top priorities of MNC is to find a way to reduce RD cost as well invest in new technologies with lower cost. For instance, according to Renault website, the alliance helps two companies to invest in advance technology like hybrid vehicles. In conclusion firms should successfully integrate their complimentary competencies to standardize their purchase orders and components manufacturing. Therefore they can reduce their cost and achieve greater outcomes. The role of Corporate and National Culture Corporate culture is the combined beliefs, values, ethics, procedures, and atmosphere of an organization ().One of the important issues raised in the Nissan Renault alliance is the management of two different cultures. While Renault strategy was liked western strategic orientation and Nissan was under the influence of corporate and national culture (Culpan.R,2002). Accordingly, the collective share of ideas and strategic management were effective and the employees of both companies could understand each other culture background, subsequently respect the identities of their colleagues as well as their values. Thus, Ghosn put cross- culture training programs for over 1500 employees from Renault to learn about the Japanese culture and 400 Nissan employees study the French culture (pooley, 2005).it was a first positive step in terms of creating a successful alliance of two different cultures. After presenting the French and Japanese culture, it was significant to understand their differ ences and how certain Hofstedes cultural theories (clenc, 2000) applicable to the case of Nissan and Renault. Japanese societies are well-known to be more collectivist and in opposite, French societies are based on individualistic efforts from employees. As the decision making process in Nissan was working the percept of groupthink, mostly the people who thought alike. Moreover, Nissan had a problem in terms of excess capacity that was based on an unofficial contract that existed between Japanese auto companies and their employees. Ghosn closed five factories and cutting some 21,000 jobs to broke this custom. He also took on the close network of relationships between auto companies and their suppliers, relationships denoted by a specific Japanese word, keiretsu (). An also after this situation as he employed new engineers in to the Nissan organisation, he decided to put English as formal language for company to deal with diversity of language spoken. In addition, in the Japanese cul ture, is not possible for a young employee to be manager for a colleague who is older in terms of age and seniority. However, the ECOs new system of promotion to begin restructuring the management process in company, was based on performance and efficiency, not employees age. As a result, the Renault-Nissan alliance has been hugely successful. There is broad acknowledgement by many at senior levels inside both companies that much credit for this must be given to their conscious effort to build cross-cultural understanding from the start. 396 Recommendations The success of alliance between Renault and Nissan proves that alliances can be a successful approach to expand globally. Therefore, we believe as a group that there are recommendations which could be taken into consideration, by any other car companies thinking to form a successful alliance to enter new markets. When two firms come to a decision of entering an alliance they should be aware of variations in cultures, languages and mentalities. This can be realised by understanding these differences and focussing more on the shared goals and objectives. In terms of operations, Renault Nissan can be used by other car companies in different ways. In supply chain management a similar organisation like RNPO can be established by other alliances to unify their purchasing orders and therefore reducing the cost of orders. In engineering we suggest for future alliances to focus on producing car components jointly instead of designing new cars entirely which failed in similar cases. By implementing the above strategies, the costs of RD can be reduced and higher output can be achieved by using shared resources. It is obvious from the case effective cross-culture management was one of the important key successes for the company. Thus, when two different companies spouse to work with each other in especial strategic alliance, creating a situation for managers and employees to learn about each other culture could be significant. Another step for developing corporate culture in this kind of alliances is making one formal language for employees to deal with diversity of spoken language. Moreover, determining shared values, knowledge and individual needs is important to create opportunities for future alliances. This can be achieved by following a social program similar to social initiation process of Renault-Nissan. Zaara Culpan. The Evils Of To Kill A Mockingbird :: essays research papers
Has evil always been around, or did man create it? One could trace evil all the way back to Adam and Eve; however, evil came to them, but it was not in them. When did evil become part of a person? No one knows, but evil has been around for a long time and unfortunately is discovered by everyone. In many great classics in literature evil is at the heart or the theme of the novel, including Harper Leeââ¬â¢s novel To Kill a Mockingbird. This classic book demonstrates the growing up of two children in the South and illustrates the theme of evil by showing how they discover, how they deal, and how they reconcile themselves to the evils they experience. First, the trial of Tom Robinson is an eye-opening experience for Jem and Scout; there they discover hatred, child abuse, and lying. Seeing pure hate is new and strange for Jem and Scout. They know that prejudice does exist, but listening to and watching Bob Ewell during the trial is astounding to them because Bob Ewell abhors all blacks, especially Tom Robinson. Bobââ¬â¢s daughter, Mayella, makes an advance on Tom, which is absolutely unspeakable and shameful at that time. In addition, Bob Ewellââ¬â¢s hate grows (especially for Atticus) because after the trial his reputation and respect is ruined, even though he does not have a high degree of integrity to begin with. Also, through the Jones 2 verdict of the trial, Jem and Scout see the hate in jurors for blacks, for it is obvious that Tom Robinson is innocent. Another new and disturbing element that Jem and Scout discover is child abuse. Having never been hit by Atticus, the children know nothing of physical, mental, emotional, or sexual abuse. However, Mayella Ewell knows too well of these abuses and is a victim of them from her own father. Bob Ewell shows he has no consideration for her by his actions or words, and this is clearly displayed during the trial when he is being asked on the stand, "Are you the father of Mayella Ewell?" (172) His crude reply is, "Well, if I ainââ¬â¢t I canââ¬â¢t do nothing about it now"(172). This shows he has no class or respect, while on the other hand, Jem and Scout are used to seeing the example of their tactful father. Also, during the trial it becomes lucid that Bob Ewell beat Mayella up and not Tom Robinson.
